Description
In 1942 the BMW company asked the Commander of JG-26, Pips Priller to pose with their newest sport coupe. This painting is from the original photo. The ad that ran back then omitted the ground crewman on the wing and the hanger. It showed major Priller and the aircraft on the airfield with another Focke-wulf in the background. At the time the BMW 327 was the most expensive car on European roads. It was priced at 8000 Reichmarks. This would be the equivalent of you buying a Mercedes 500 SL today. The car's later version had an 80 horsepower motor that gave it a speed of 140 kilometers an hour.(87mph) The ad was to associate the power and performance with the Focke-wulf. The Focke-wulf 190 had a1539 horsepower radial motor. Several variants of the FW-190 were produced. The most common we read or see is the short nosed 'A' or the ' D' Dora version with the longer nose. The personal favorite of this artist is the TA-152 high altitude version with a longer wingspan and nose. Beautiful clean lines. Pips Priller lived until May of 1961. He had flown 1307 combat missions and claimed 101 aerial victories.A special note, Pips also acted as an advisor during the making of the film" The longest Day" The movie was released in September 1962.
