Description
Back in the 90's my wife and I managed an apartment complex in Auburn, Wa. We rented an apartment to an elderly gentleman by the name of John. After getting to know John I found that he had been in the Army Aircorps as a young man. He told me many stories about his flying career; this painting depicts my favorite. As a student pilot he learned to fly at one of the training stations in Arizona. Prior to his solo flight with an instructor on board John had lost power in his motor. Looking for a place to set his ship down he found a meadow among some pine trees. Bringing his airspeed up in a shallow dive he came in close and slipped his stearman between two trees by bringing the wings to virtually a 90* angle then leveled out to a landing in the grassy meadow. He told me that his insructor had almost wet his pants. He chastised his student for taking a chance with such a manuever but also commended him with a " Well Done". John graduated and went on to become an Aircorp Flight Instructor himself.
I had built a plastic model depicting the same seen and presented it to John. I could see the love of having been an aviator in his eyes. I'm sure he's gone now but this work is for him and ALL those young men that served. The best, and shortest description of John.... A true stick and rudder man.
